ABORIGINAL FAMILY PRESERVATION

Supporting Aboriginal families is what initially founded Muloobinba Aboriginal Corporation, the opportunity for Aboriginal people to support and work with our own people. All programs we offer as an organisation are built on the foundation of this.

Aboriginal Family Preservation

In 2011 Muloobinba was successful with a tender from DCJ to commence the then called Intense Family Support, now known as Aboriginal Family Preservation.

The Aboriginal Family Preservation Program allows Muloobinba to provide intense supports to Aboriginal families in the Community Service Centre boundaries of Raymond Terrace, Cessnock and Maitland.

Aboriginal Family Preservation works with vulnerable Aboriginal families where there is identified risk of harm to children and young people. We work with the parent/s as well as children and young people to work on the areas of their lives that are contributing to the risk.

The program offers a Caseworker from Muloobinba to work intensively with Aboriginal families up to 15 hours a week for 12 weeks to work on areas where they need the support most.

We develop case plans with the family that provide us clear goals of what types of support the family may require at that time, these are called “Family Action Plan For Change”.

The Aboriginal Family Preservation programs work closely with Aboriginal families to reduce risk to Children and Young People. Once the 12-week program is completed, and the family has successfully met their goals and the risk is minimised, we will continue to work with families for a further 12 weeks, checking in on their progress to ensure the family is sustaining the changes they have made.

We aim to be successful in this program with our work with families, our kids are already overrepresented in the child protection space and makeup 41% of the overall statistics in Out of Home Care in NSW.

The Aboriginal Family Preservation program can only accept referrals through the Department of Communities and Justice at Raymond Terrace, Maitland and Cessnock.

If you are a family living in these areas and are currently working with DCJ, then please speak to your caseworker about a referral to IFP.
